Our feature presentation: The Spirit
One of the first films to be released in the new year is
“The Spirit”. Rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht)
is killed in the line of duty but he soon returns from the grave
as The Spirit, a hero whose personal mission is to fight against
Central City's forces of evil and the implacable crime kingpin
known as The Octopus (Samuel L Jackson). Also stars Scarlett
Johansson, Eva Mendes, Jaime King and Paz Vega.
Forthcoming attractions: Push and The Soloist
Films being released on 6th February include “Push”
and “The Soloist”.
The former has a concept that might be described as X-Men with
psychics, as the film revolves around people with an array of
incredible powers. Movers are telekinetic, able to move things
with their will alone. Watchers see images of the future while
Pushers are able to bend you to their will and place thoughts
and impulses into your mind. The cast includes Chris Evans,
Dakota Fanning, Camilla Belle, Djimon Hounsou, Maggie Siff and
Scott Michael Campbell.
While the latter film, “The Soloist” is a true-life
tale about the homeless musical prodigy Nathaniel Ayers and
his friendship with Los Angeles Times reporter Steve Lopez.
Stars Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener, Jamie Foxx and Stephen
Root.
The following week, there is the release of ‘Pink Panther
2’. Insp. Jacques Clouseau teams up with a squad of International
detectives who are just as bumbling as he is. Their mission
- stop a globe-trotting thief who specializes in stealing historical
artifacts. Stars Andy Garcia, John Cleese, Alfred Molina, Aishwarya
Rai and Steve Martin.
Moviewatch grapevine
Baz Luhrmann, who directed “Strictly Ballroom”,
“Moulin Rouge” and most recently “Australia”,
is set to tackle F Scott Fitzgerald‘s “The Great
Gatsby”. The film follows the life and loves of a playboy
in the roaring 20s, just prior to the Great Depression.
Christopher McQuarrie, the man behind Tom Cruise‘s latest
film “Valkyrie”, is hoping to team up with the star
for a further three projects. McQuarrie, who co–wrote
and produced the Nazi thriller, has a number of projects on
the go, and is slanting them with a view to getting Tom Cruise
to sign on.
First up is another World War II film with New Regency entitled
“Flying Tigers”, which follows a volunteer US squadron
who helped the Chinese repel the Japanese, before the US entered
the war. Other projects include a film with Guillermo del Toro,
called “The Champions” which is based on the hit
British television series about government agents developing
superhuman abilities, and “The Tourist”, which is
an espionage thriller and remake of French film “Anthony
Zimmer”.
Maggie Q, who appeared in “Die Hard 4.0” and “Miami
Vice” is to take on the lead role in computer game adaptation
‘King of Fighters‘. Gordon Chan is in the director‘s
chair, and the film will also feature Ray Park and David Leitch.
The $12 million production will wrap in mid–January, with
the movie scheduled to hit our screens in the early part of
2010.
Anna Friel is set to make a rom com entitled “The Wedding”.
The film will look at the trials and tribulations of young love.
Jesse Eisenberg will play a young guy who interrupts the wedding
of a girl he is infatuated with – namely Friel.
And finally, casting has already begun for the sequel to the
‘80s futuristic classic “Tron”. Olivia Wilde
has signed on as the female lead in "TR2N", and will
team up with Beau Garrett. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who
is also helming the remake of ‘70s classic Logan‘s
Run, “TR2N” is scheduled for release some time in
2011, courtesy of Disney. The story will see Wilde working as
a drone in the virtual world who desperately tries to prevent
Master Control Program from once again trying to take over the
world, while Jeff Bridges is set to reprise his original role
as hacker Kevin Flynn/Clu.
