fundraising

HWD Hospital Radio is staffed and run entirely by volunteers and receives no regular income in the way that commercial radio stations or businesses do. However, like other radio stations and businesses we have overheads, repairs and ongoing costs which have to be paid for from Association funds. As a result, fundraising is vital.

progress

As technology has moved on so quickly in the last few years it has been difficult for us to keep up to date without spending money. Certainly, we could have continued for many years with the equipment we had when we first moved into the new studio complex at Dewsbury in 1988 (which was fitted out with over £15,000 raised as part of out Studio '88 appeal). But as equipment becomes older it starts to break down, especially when it is in use daily. Often repairs are uneconomic and it's more sensible to replace the item with a newer, more modern model. Without reliable equipment we aren't able to broadcast the same quality of programmes and feel like we are short-changing listeners. This is why it is so important that we raise funds to be able to maintain quality programmes from a studio that works reliably and doesn't look like it runs with equipment Noah used in the Ark!

In fact, some of our studio refits have been funded by grants. In 1997, Sainsbury's kindly donated £2,000 to help purchase a mixing desk for Studio Two.

In 2000 we were delighted to receive a Lottery grant of £5,000 and a grant of £2,000 from Lloyds TSB to provide Studio One with a new mixing desk (to replace a 12-year-old model), a PC and ancilliary items. Studio One was fitted with new woodwork and given a makeover in August 2005 (see the studio tour for pictures).

However, between grants and large donations, we continues to raise funds in many ways. Since the early 1990s we've held a balloon race in Dewsbury Town Centre and now regularly attend local galas, fetes and markets with our range of hand made crafts and cards made exclusively for HWD Hospital Radio by Tony and Janet Barrett.
